A message from the Director
Hi and welcome to ‘Love is….’
The idea for this show came about after lockdown, when I realised that Gloc had become a major part of my life, and that the people in it had become lifelong friends who have helped me through so many ups and downs. They were my Gloc family! In the 12 years I have been a member I have met so many people who have lots of things in common - mainly our love of all things musical. But we also share a desire to be in a place where you can let go of your problems for a short while, be surrounded by people who listen and who allow anyone to be whoever it is they choose to be.
So, I wanted to celebrate my Gloc family and their inclusivity through some inspiring music from ground-breaking musicals, as well as icons who have supported the rights of everyone to love whoever they love. To me, love isn’t just about love songs, it is also about joy, acceptance, creativity and friendship. Each section and song has a story to it, and the same goes for our members. Tonight you will hear a few of the Gloc membership tell you about their Gloc story as well as a little bit about what each section of our show.
Sit back, relax and allow us to welcome you into our Gloc family for these few hours and enjoy these songs that celebrate love in all formats as after all, Love is….whatever you want it to be!

This section includes music from shows whose characters break the boundaries of gender identity. Being strong enough to know who you are and defy the ‘rules’ that some parts of society tell us we should abide by, makes these characters and real life subjects inspirational and people we want to celebrate. Love is about embracing the individuality of everyone you meet.

Anyone who has ever questioned their sexuality has their own journey, but knowing there is support and people who understand can make it a lot easier. The next selection of songs are by artists who have become ‘gay icons’ through their music, activism or media presence. We want to show our thanks to them by performing some of their most epic songs because Love is accepting everyone no matter who they love.

Many people find personal comfort and solace through music, and sometimes music can be a part of something much bigger. The following numbers are from musicals that were revolutionary in their time. Rent tackled the AIDS crisis at a time when it was seen as taboo, whilst Bye Bye Birdie was the first musical starring both black and white actors in equal roles, while as recently as 2016 Waitress was the first ever Broadway musical to have an all female production team. Seeing Tim Currie in drag in Rocky Horror was hugely freeing for so many, and the film is often credited as a powerful rejection of social norm, while in Hair onstage nudity and messages of positivity encouraged audiences to love themselves and their bodies. People who first saw these musicals knew they were a part of something bigger and our take on the songs in this section hopefully do these iconic shows justice. Love is never settling for good enough, and striving for revolution.

As we go through our lives many of us learn that love can come in many forms. Friends can become family, animals can be a bigger part of our lives than we realise, and hobbies, religion and even work can fill our lives with joy and fulfilment. To finish up we leave you with songs that mean a lot to us in Gloc as they show us that we can all find love in so many places and that everybody can love and deserve to be loved.
